Trump Backs Armenia’s Pashinyan, Promotes US-Linked Transit Corridor Ahead of Election

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has expressed public support for Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan ahead of the country’s upcoming parliamentary elections, describing him as a leader aligned with a shared vision for regional peace and economic development, according to reports.

Armenia is set to hold parliamentary elections on June 7, in what is considered a pivotal vote for Pashinyan and his ruling Civil Contract party amid evolving geopolitical dynamics in the South Caucasus. The election will determine the composition of parliament, which in turn influences the selection of the prime minister.

In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump offered what he described as his “COMPLETE and TOTAL Endorsement” for Pashinyan’s re-election, while also highlighting plans for expanded US involvement in regional infrastructure projects.

He referenced an upcoming initiative called the TRIPP (Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity), a transit corridor intended to connect Azerbaijan with its Nakhchivan exclave through southern Armenia. The project was previously agreed upon in a joint declaration signed at the White House during a summit involving Armenian, Azerbaijani, and US leadership.

Trump stated that the corridor would “transform the South Caucasus” and facilitate broader economic connectivity across Central Asia, while also benefiting US energy companies by improving access routes toward global markets.

He added that construction on the project would begin soon, describing it as a joint effort between the United States and Armenia that would elevate regional cooperation and economic growth.

The endorsement follows recent diplomatic engagement in Yerevan, where US Secretary of State Marco Rubio signed a strategic partnership agreement with Armenian officials, including cooperation on critical minerals and infrastructure development.

Under the framework announced earlier in the year, a US-backed development company would manage infrastructure along the corridor under a long-term arrangement, while Armenia would retain full sovereignty over the territory involved.
